4 Styling Tips to Easily Transition Between Thanksgiving & Christmas
The great debate of Thanksgiving or Christmas decor has been going on since before Halloween. It always makes me laugh because of course mere mortals don’t have Christmas decorations up in October, but “mighty” influencers like to “inspire,” and in all honesty, “get us to buy.” Yet, it did get me thinking: how about a floral arrangement that would work for both? Furthermore, how about some styling tips that would easily allow Thanksgiving & Christmas decor to co-mingle. When done right, you can go from Thanksgiving to Christmas with just a few small changes. In fact, I even did two Christmas looks. I followed the below 4 tips to easily transition between seasons.
1: Metallic Ornaments Aren’t Just for Christmas
Pile an eclectic mix of metallic ornaments in a tray or bowl paired with pumpkins (or pumpkin figurines) and pine cones for beautiful and unexpected Thanksgiving decor. Then when Christmas comes, just remove the pumpkins and add a Christmas tree, reindeer or Santa figurine.
2: White Hydrangeas Can Be Styled for Any Season
For fall and winter, white hydrangeas look great in metallic vases. Keep them neutral or add a pop of red berries. If red isn’t your color, maybe add blue juniper berries. Have fun with it.
3: You Only Need a Couple Seasonal Pillows to Make a Big Statement
Start with a base of white/cream pillows and chunky knit throws. Then add a couple of seasonal pillows for your pop of color. (For DIY Christmas pillows, be sure to check out my “Merry” & “Bright” Christmas Pillow Tutorial.)
4: Remember to Invest in High-Quality Neutral Decor
It’s tempting to only buy holiday-specific decorations, but make sure you have a good selection of everyday decor items first. Invest in high-quality neutral vases, trays, and votive holders. This will allow you to easily change things up with less expensive seasonal decor items like flowers, ornaments, and pillow covers.
Keep in mind, neutral doesn’t mean boring. Pick different finishes and textures. For example, mercury glass votives and vases (used in my examples) are “neutral” yet the pieces come in different patterns, textures, shapes and sizes that provide visual interest. White ceramic pottery, textured glass, wood, galvanized metal and cement are other textures to look for.
So how are you currently decorating? I hope this inspires you to think about your seasonal decor a little differently. Not only will these tips make decorating easier, but they’re also budget-friendly. Win, win! Happy decorating.
