I found baby pumpkins at the grocery store yesterday so, in my book, it’s officially autumn! Okay, okay autumn actually starts on September 22, but since Starbucks has already brought back Pumpkin Spice Lattes and football season has begun, all the fall feels are really getting me excited for the season ahead. And I know I’m not alone. In honor of everyone’s love of autumn, I created this free 8″ x 10″ wall art printable that has my favorite autumn quote.
“If a year was tucked inside of a clock, then autumn would be the magic hour, ” Victoria Erickson. How true is that? But why is autumn so magical? Is it the crisp, cool days? The changing foliage? Football tailgates? Pumpkins? Pumpkin spice everything? Fuzzy throws? Cozy sweaters? Apple picking? Plaids? Family gatherings? All of the above?
I honestly love all of the above. From baby boo pumpkins to getting cozy on the couch and cheering on my Buckeyes, I love fall! Another thing that’s so magical about fall is we have three months that each take on their own significance as well as home decor to match.
What the 3 Months of Autumn Bring
Let’s Start with September
September is for welcoming the change of seasons—going back to school, celebrating the start of football, and recognizing that days are becoming shorter. September home decor tends to be a mix of summer and autumn. Bright colors are still in fashion but you start to see metallics, darker woods and maybe even a pumpkin or two. This September, I’ve really been enjoying the bright colors of dahlias. I’ve been using them in a variety of floral arrangements. Pair dahlias with sunflowers and you have a perfect mix of summer and fall.
We Then Move Into October
You can’t think of October without thinking of Halloween. October simply exudes fun! It’s our chance to get spooky with our decor, think up creative costumes, and host parties for kids and adults alike. Home decor get’s it’s inspiration from haunted houses of course. Homes are usually decked out in traditional Halloween elements like witches, bats, spiders and skeletons—haunting elements you really don’t use at any other time of year. And let’s not forget all the black and white accents that are used. Oh how I love black and white in home decor.
And Last but Not Least, November
November is centered around Thanksgiving—a time to reflect on all we are grateful for, planning large feasts, and enjoying large family gatherings. Home decor usually focuses on the dining room, making sure we have beautiful tablescapes that welcome guests to our large Thanksgiving day feasts. It’s also a month full of baking—from apple crisps to pumpkin pie—ovens seem to be put to good use in November.
So what’s your favorite thing about fall? I know it’s hard to pick just one thing, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on why so many of us find autumn to be the magic hour.
