DIY Painted Taper Candles

January 23, 2016

Aren’t these candle’s gorgeous – if I do say so myself. Can you believe I made them? I love making crafty things that don’t look crafty and these really hit the mark for me.

I’m extra excited for this DIY because when I thought of it I wasn’t sure if you could paint on candles. So like all things I’m not sure about—I Googled it. The first thing to pop up was DecoArt Paint Adhesion Medium so I ordered it from Amazon and two days later (you gotta love Amazon Prime) I was painting on candles—and it worked!

Materials

  • DecoArt Paint Adhesion Medium
  • Acrylic Craft Paint (I used Martha Stewart Crafts Slate Gray, but you can obviously use any color)
  • White Taper Candles (would also work on pillars or other candle shapes)
  • Painters or Scotch Tape
  • Foam Brushes
  • Floral foam block
  • X-acto knife

Instructions

DIY Painted Taper Candles

  1. Tape your pattern on your candles. For even alternating stripes, use a piece of tape as your spacing guide (as shown).
  2. Make holes in your foam block using your candle. Make it deep enough that your candle can stand in it for drying. Make as many holes as you have candles to paint.

  3. Mix your DecoArt Paint Adhesion Medium with your acrylic paint color per instructions on the Adhesion Medium bottle. Then paint your candles. This first coat will be slightly transparent, this is okay as you will need to do two to three coats of paint. Place your candle in your foam block for drying. Be sure paint is dry before you apply a second/third coat (usually about 1 hour dry time).
***NOTE: you will want to make sure the top or bottom of your candle is not painted in order to be placed in the foam block for drying. In my case, I left the tops unpainted (so the pattern started with white).

  4. Once final coat of paint is dry, lightly score along the tape edge with an X-acto knife before removing tape. If you don’t do this step your paint could peel off when you peel off the tape.
  5. Gently peel off tape (your X-acto knife can help get you started).
  6. Place in a pretty candle holder, light and enjoy!
