These super stylish DIY Rattan Cane Woven Hurricanes will let you enjoy the look of cane/rattan without the commitment of buying new furniture. Simply wrap a glass hurricane with a piece of cane webbing and you’ll go from plain-Jane to trendy in seconds. The DIY candle holders are the perfect trendy yet classy spring home accessory you never knew you needed, but will totally need to make!
Like bamboo and rattan, cane furniture is usually used in coastal decor; however, it’s enjoying a comeback right now and is being used in traditional, modern, and eclectic spaces alike. Currently, you can find cane chairs, tables, and cabinets from both low-end and high-end retailers like Target, Pottery Barn, and Serena and Lilly. And if you’re like me and love the look, but don’t have the budget or space to invest in new furniture right now, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the vibe. Instead, simply decorate with cheaper cane accessories like cane trays, cane vases, cane boxes, and cane lamps.
To be honest, I got the idea for my DIY Rattan Cane Woven Hurricanes after seeing these hurricanes from Pottery Barn. While cute, you’ll see they are very pricey ($30 for the small and $60 for the large). I figured I could get the look for less. So I made four candleholders (two small and two large) for under the price of one of the Pottery Barn ones. The craft is very simple and took under 10 minutes to make all four.
Materials
- 1/2″ Fine Open Cane Webbing Sheet – 18″ x 18″
- I bought mine from Joann Fabric, but it looks like they are sold out. Instead, try Online Fabric Store and their Cane Webbing options or search “Cane Webbing” on Amazon or Google.
- I used two sheets to make two small and two large hurricanes with some leftover
- Glass Hurricane
- For the large, I used a 8″ x 6″ glass vase from Walmart
- For the small, I used a 4″ x 3″ glass vase from Target
- Hot glue & hot-glue gun
- Candles
Instructions
Cut your cane webbing to the height and circumference of your vase. If your vase’s circumference is larger than your piece of can webbing, simply cut two pieces that will add up to the length.
Using your hot glue gun, glue the cane webbing to your vase. You don’t need a lot of glue, just along all four sides of your webbing sheet. Remember to work in small sections so your hot glue doesn’t dry before you attach it. I found it easiest to lay the glass vase on top of the webbing and rolled it little by little until it was all glued.
Add a candle and enjoy!
The airy feel of the Cane Woven Hurricanes sets the perfect mood lighting for an Easter or spring tablescape. I paired my DIY candle holders with my DIY Decoupage Napkin Floral Vase. A project that also looks expensive, but costs under $10. Be sure to check it out as well as my other spring crafts and Easter project ideas.
