Topping pumpkins with flowers or plants is one of my favorite no-carve ways to elevate my pumpkin game. I’ve used succulents, faux flowers, dried hydrangeas and now enter dried strawflowers. In this post, I’m presenting a simple DIY Strawflower Pumpkin Topper that you can use for years to come.
Strawflowers, or everlasting flowers, are one of the prettiest flowers available in the fall. They come in a variety of bright colors and retain their color when they’re dry. Their everlasting qualities make them perfect to use in fresh or dried floral bouquets and they are fun to craft with too. I topped my baby white pumpkin with a variety of pink, white, yellow and orange strawflowers. The end result is a bright and beautiful pumpkin that can dress up any Thanksgiving or fall tablescape.
I used a real pumpkin because I love how organic and unique real pumpkins look; however, you could also use a plastic or paper mache pumpkin. If using a real pumpkin, be sure to use a layer of moss first so that all the strawflowers are glued to the moss. The moss will allow you to be able to remove the strawflower pumpkin topper before you throw away your pumpkin. If using a faux pumpkin, you can skip the moss layer unless you want to see some moss.
Materials
- Strawflowers (available online at afloral.com)
- Millet in mango/goldenrod or natural (available online at afloral.com)
- Small white pumpkin (I used a real pumpkin, but you could also use a faux pumpkin)
- Moss
- Spray glue
- Hot glue and hot glue gun
Instructions
Add moss to the top of your small pumpkin using the spray glue. You’ll then glue all the dried flowers to the moss so that you can easily remove the “topper” at the end of the season and save it to use again next year. (If using a faux pumpkin, you don’t need the moss unless you want to see some green. And you’ll just store the whole pumpkin to use again next year.)
Add flowers. Cut the heads of your strawflowers off the stems. Hot glue them to the top of the pumpkin on the moss. Add as many as you want. I created a dome shape. Add the millet pieces around the base of your strawflowers. Depending on how well they are staying, you may or may not need to glue them in place.
Enjoy! If you use a real pumpkin, remember you can remove the topper before you throw your pumpkin away. Store your strawflower pumpkin topper in a plastic bag and reuse your topper again next year!
There are many ways you can use your DIY strawflower pumpkin topper for your fall decor. Use it a set of three strawflower pumpkins down the center of your Thanksgiving table or use one strawflower pumpkin as an accent on your fall cocktail bar. However you use your strawflower pumpkin, I’m sure it will make you and your loved ones smile. And be sure to check out our DIY Faux-Etched Fall Leaves Pitcher. It too dresses up any fall bar.
