Hot cocoa bars and hot cocoa dessert boards are all the rage. However, you can have a big hit with far less hassle if you just rim your mug with sprinkles. Plus, don’t have Christmas mugs? No problem. Adding sprinkles to the rim of any plain white/cream mug turns it into instant Christmas. This leads me to believe, Sprinkle Mugs are great all on their own or as a perfect addition for making a show-stopping hot chocolate bar or board.
I’m sure you realize this, but the Sprinkle Mug is not limited to hot cocoa. Sprinkles will make any drink festive. In fact, I actually would prefer my sprinkle mug with eggnog. Want your child to drink more milk, make it special with some sprinkles. And who says you can’t have a milkshake in winter? My niece and I actually did this same idea a few years ago for Fourth of July “Freak Shakes”. I think you get the idea. Have fun with it!
Caution: Make sure your hot cocoa isn’t too hot
I have not tested the sprinkle mug with hot cocoa yet. However, it’s not like I came up with the idea of a sprinkle rim; therefore, my guess is it will work. I think you just want to make sure your hot cocoa isn’t too hot or the frosting will most likely melt and make a major mess. You’ve been warned!
Ingredients/Materials
- Sprinkles (Using bigger sprinkles will create larger visual interest. Don’t forget to use white in the mix because a lot of the frosting gets covered.)
- Vanilla frosting
- Candy canes (Only use candy canes if you like peppermint hot cocoa because the candy cane will melt.)
- Mugs (Simple white/cream mugs work great. Christmas mugs or other busy designs will likely distract from the visual impact of the sprinkles.)
- Knife
- Shallow bowl or plate that fits your mug
Instructions
Using a knife, liberally rim your mug with vanilla frosting. Frosting can be mostly on the outside, but okay if on the inside too.
Pour the sprinkles into a bowl/plate. Dip your mug into the sprinkles. Move it around until it’s covered in sugary goodness.
If you like peppermint hot cocoa, add a candy cane to the inside of your glass. To make the candy cane “stand up,” attach it to the inside of your mug with a little bit of the frosting. Now you’re ready to serve hot cocoa, eggnog or other festive drink. Enjoy!
For a quick and easy Hot Cocoa Dessert Board: Place your Sprinkle Mugs on a tray and then fill the tray with marshmallows and few cookies. It really can be that simple.

Cindi PetersonThanks, Cindi! Like I said, I truly hope it doesn’t melt right off, but in theory, I think it should work.
