Need a simple gift idea or simply want to add a fun touch to your coffee table? These DIY Decorative Matchboxes are easy and charming. Pair it with your favorite candle and you’ll have a perfect gift. They cost about $1 to make, so you can make a bunch, making them perfect for group gifts or even stocking stuffers. And be sure to keep one for your own coffee table or bathroom. I use them wherever I have candles. Small matchboxes also work, but my Dollar Store currently only had the large boxes.
I used fabric, but you can also use wrapping paper or scrapbooking paper. If you know how to decoupage, you already know the how-to, but I have the details below.
Materials
- Matchboxes (my Dollar Store sold sets of two for $1)
- Fabric, wrapping paper or scrapbooking paper
- Paint (white or color that matches your fabric)
- Mod Podge
- Painters tape or masking tape
- Fine sandpaper
Instructions
- Measure your matchbox and cut fabric/paper to the correct size. The large matchboxes should be 2 5/8″ x 4 1/2″. You’ll need two pieces.
- Cover the sides of the matchbox with your painters tape so no paint or glue gets on the area where you strike your match.
- Paint the large surfaces of your matchbox so that the color of the matchbox design doesn’t show through when you add your fabric or paper.
- Once dry, decoupage your fabric/paper to your matchbox following the instructions on the Mod Podge. You’ll need a couple coats.
- Again, once dry, your decoupage may feel rough so use your sandpaper to lightly sand so you have a smooth finish.
- Take off your tape and enjoy!
