DIY Pumpkin Topiary

DIY Pumpkin Topiaries are a fun way to display the ever popular baby “boo” pumpkins.

White baby “boo” pumpkins (even their name is so cute) have become all the rage over the last few years. As soon as they appear in stores, I buy up at least a dozen to spread around my apartment for easy fall decor. This year I had one sitting next to a terra cotta pots with a dying plant in it (a green thumb I do not have) and I thought, “That pumpkin would look cute sitting on that pot.” And my little pumpkin topiaries were born.

I at first called them “pumpkin moss pots” but then someone on Instagram saw my picture and called it a topiary and I was like—that is totally what it is.

I love how rustic, yet modern these feel. I think it’s a combination of the aged terra cotta pot, the bright green moss and the stark white pumpkin. And they are as easy as 1, 2, 3 to make! In fact, I made my first Instagram Story videos documenting the process and it literally only took three 10-second videos to show the process.

Materials

• Terra Cotta Pot (I used a 5.5″ tall, 4.5″ diameter pot I aged from Michaels, find in store or online here)
• Filler (I used plastic grocery bags, but you could use paper or dirt)
• Moss (Available at most craft stores)
• Baby Boo Pumpkin

Instructions

Step 1: Pick your pot and fill it with whatever filler you chose. Plastic grocery bags work great. Leave a little less than 1 inch on the top. As for your pot, if you want to get this same aged terra cotta pot, there is a process you can do using lime powder (here’s a great tutorial on Martha Stewart) OR I just discovered one using baking powder via The Curtis Casa. I’ve never tried that one, but the results look good on her blog. And everyone should have baking powder on hand!

Step 2: Add a layer of moss for your pumpkin to sit on. I used a bright green moss because I like the contrast that it creates, yet you could use whatever variety speaks to you.

Step 3: Place your pumpkin on top. Could this be any easier? Or cuter? I think not, if I do say so myself.

They look cute with a spooky twist too! Have fun with it!
