St. Patrick’s Day is this weekend so I thought it would be fun to set the stage with a Rainbow Flower Arrangement. And it just so happens to be ranunculus season, so this ROY-G-BIV inspired floral centerpiece was easy to buy flowers for and are even available at Trader Joe’s.
I love showing this beauty on my coffee table. I’m all for providing inspiration for party decor, but, the reality is, we aren’t always throwing parties. Yet, we are always enjoying our lives in our homes. I hope showing how I use flowers in my home inspires you to have a little fun with your own home decor—even if you aren’t having a party. Yet, this arrangement would definitely be a show stopper for a party as well. Be it for St. Paddy’s day or a unicorn birthday party, this rainbow of flowers is sure to delight.
Materials
- Rectangular vase/pot (mine is from Ikea)
- Chicken wire or floral foam (available at hardware stores or craft stores like Michaels)
- Flowers in a rainbow of colors, I used:
- Yellow, Orange, Light Pink, Dark Pink Ranunculus
- Yellow, Pink and Purple Freesia
- Small purple filler flower (sorry, I do not know what it is called, awful for a blogger, I know)
- Green Mini Hydrangea
- Green lemon leaves and other filler greenery
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare your vase/pot. To create a rainbow effect, you’ll want to use a rectangular container. Keep in mind, when using a wider mouthed container you’ll want to use chicken wire (or floral foam) to allow your flowers to stand up better. Chicken wire is available at Home Depot but in large amounts. For small amounts, go to your local craft store like Michaels. You’ll find the chicken wire with the floral arranging materials. Just cut a piece large enough for your container and place it so it runs along the top.
Step 2: Start with your greenery. Create a base layer of greenery with the lemon leaves, green mini hydrangea
Step 3: Add your flowers, starting with yellow. Imagine dividing your container into three sections. The left section will be mainly your yellow flowers, the middle section will be your pinks and the right will be your purples. Start with the yellow and then work your way across. The holes in the chicken wire will allow your flowers to stand up even when placed in the center.
Step 4: Add orange flowers. Mix in the orange right next to the yellow flowers. This is the transition flower into the pink, so orange will kind of overlap into both the yellow and the pink flowers.
Step 5: Add pink flowers. I decided to use light pink and dark pink flowers in place of red. Add these to the center of the arrangement.
Step 6: Add purple flowers to complete your arrangement. It’s really that simple, just add in the purple flowers so they overlap into the pink section. You could also buy more bluish-purple flowers to really end with more of a blue. The possibilities are up to you.
You can create the same look using three smaller vases. Just make one vase yellow and orange, one pink and one purple. Here I used vintage milk glass glasses and when lined up they give the same feel as the larger rectangular container.
