As we slowly transition into fall, here is a flower tutorial that has both late-summer and fall vibes. Below I outline each flower used, the quantity used, and also provide alternative flower options. If you want to watch a video of the tutorial, simply visit my Instagram account (@tonalitydesigns). On Instagram, I made a Reels that takes you from start to finish in making the bouquet.
Flowers Used
Most of the flowers were from Trader Joe’s except the dahlias were from a local flower farm.
- 3 sunflowers or other LARGE flower like hydrangeas, peonies or large dahlias
- 2-3 dark fuchsia mums or other MEDIUM flower like roses or dahlias
- 2-3 light pink dahlias or other SMALL flower like spray roses, carnations, calla lilies or tulips
- 3-5 stems of coffee bean or other small accent like berries, pepper berries or billy buttons
- Eucalyptus branches or other greenery
Instructions
- Use a small candle holder or vase to create a small to medium sized bouquet. You can follow the same basic instructions for a large bouquet, just use more flowers.
- Start by placing a few eucalyptus branches in your vase. This will create a base to help anchor your flowers.
- Place sunflowers in the vase by crisscrossing the stems. Make sure the head of the sunflower rests on the lip of your vase.
- Place mums in the vase, continuing to crisscross. Once again, allow the head of the flower to rest on the lip of your vase.
- Place dahlias in the vase to fill in holes. The dahlias will most likely sit up higher than the sunflower and mums and will not rest on the lip of the vase.
- Add in coffee bean stems to further fill in the holes.
- Adjust flowers and add more eucalyptus branches. Make sure the eucalyptus branches fall under the flowers or between the flowers.
- Enjoy! Remember to change the water every couple days. Also, the dahlias will most likely die before the rest of your flowers. If you want to fix, simply replace with roses or carnations.
Sunflower tip: pick sunflowers with a dark center and do not use the sunflowers with a yellow or light center. The dark brown center is what provides visual interest in not only the sunflower but the flower arrangement as well.
How do you like this combination of flowers and colors? I feel like they are the perfect August/September combination. In fact, I tend to do this similar vibe every year. To prove it, below are a few from throughout the years.
So have I convinced you yet to try creating a bright and cheerful summer/fall bouquet? If you do, please share pictures with me on Instagram (@tonalitydesigns). I love seeing what you create.
