Valentine’s Day is only a few days away and I thought I’d celebrate with a Blood Orange Margarita. Frankly, I first made it because the drink happens to be the perfect pink/purple color to match my Valentine’s decor. However, it also turns out to be a really fabulous and simple margarita to make. So win, win! And I promise they are simple. When searching for cocktail recipes I didn’t understand why so many were so complicated. So rest assured, this really is simple. It requires only four ingredients and can be made for one or for a large group.
First, it helps that it is citrus season so blood oranges are readily available. When I went to Trader Joe’s, they had about 10 orange varieties including the blood oranges. Plus, I’m luckily enough to live in California so I got some of my blood oranges from a friend’s backyard. How cool is that?
Keep in mind that the color of your cocktail will be lighter or darker depending on the ripeness of your oranges. Some of my blood oranges were really light and some were really dark. Either way, they tasted great.
I served the margarita ‘straight up’, much like you would a martini. Therefore, I made the margarita in a cocktail shaker and then served it in a glass with no ice. I found that the drink was plenty cold enough after being shaken in the cocktail shaker. And this way, the drink didn’t get watered down by any ice.
I know most cocktails are measured in ounces, but frankly, I get annoyed by this because I always forget how much an ounce is. Is it a small shot glass or a large shot glass? Then it gets really annoying when it’s 1 1/2 ounces. What? So instead, I’m providing the measurements in good old cups. I basically used a 1/3 cup to measure the tequila and blood orange juice and it worked perfectly. But do you. It’s basically 1 part tequila to 1 part blood orange juice and then a splash of lime and a splash of agave syrup.

Note: As stated above, all measurements are done in cups/teaspoons instead of the normal ounces usually used for cocktails. I found this way easier, but if wanting to use a shot glass it is basically 1 part tequila to 1 part blood orange juice with a splash of lime juice and agave syrup.
- 1/3 Cup Tequila
- 1/3 Cup Fresh Blood Orange Juice (about 1 orange, but depends on size)
- 1/8 Cup Fresh Lime Juice (about 1/2 a lime)
- 1 Tsp. Agave Syrup (more or less to taste)
- Ice
- Sugar sprinkles (optional for rim)
Directions
To rim glass, place the sugar sprinkles in a shallow dish or plate wide enough for your glass. Rub a lime or orange wedge around the rim of the glass. Dip glass in the sugar sprinkles.
For blood orange margarita, fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add tequila, blood orange juice, lime juice and agave syrup to shaker. Shake, shake, shake. I suggest shaking for at least 30 seconds. Basically, keep shaking until you know it’s good and cold. Pour into your glass and enjoy! Note: I served it straight up and did not put ice in the glass. You could add ice to the glass if you prefer.
