My latest sewing project is a simple DIY Candle Wrap. The candle wrap can utilize your fabric scraps and the end product is a simple and affordable way to dress up your candles. It makes for a thoughtful gift too. I made mine with Valentine’s Day in mind, but you could make this craft using any fabric colors that match your home decor or current holiday.
The DIY candle wrap can be used with any jar candle. I used a jar candle from IKEA (the SINNLIG). I keep these candles on hand to give as gifts because they are affordable, smell great and their clean design makes them easy to decorate. I’ve often used my Cricut to put a saying on them, but I’m really loving how the fabric wrap looks.
The final fabric wrap resembles a quilter’s fabric roll (a.k.a. a Jelly Roll) which is pretty perfect since I had my mom, an avid quilter, in mind when making this craft. I think the candle would look so cute in her sewing room, but it also would look cute in her bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom… Pretty much anywhere you’d put a candle.
Materials
Note: fabric sizes are based on the 3.5″ jar candle from IKEA (the SINNLIG). Adjust sizes to fit your jar candle.
- One 12″ x 2.5″ piece of white linen fabric
- An assortment of cotton fabrics, I used five coordinating fabrics (Size: 2″ long and about 1/2″ to 1″ wide. The sizes can vary. You need about 15-20 pieces.)
- White all-purpose thread
- IKEA SINNLIG Candle (or any Jar Candle, just adjust the sizes)
- 1/4″ white ribbon
Instructions
Fray the edges of your white linen fabric. About 1/4″ on all sides. This creates the base layer of your fabric wrap.
Prepare your cotton fabric strips. Rip 1/2″ to 1″ fabric strips from your cotton fabrics. Ripping the strips will create the “frayed” look. You can also cut your fabrics for a cleaner look. Finally, cut the strips down to 2″ long pieces. You’ll need about 15-20 pieces.
Sew fabric strips to your white linen fabric. Start by overlapping fabric strips on your white linen fabric piece. Pin in place. Then sew around all four sides of your white linen fabric piece. Use about 1/8″ seam allowance. This will be enough to hold all the strips in place.
Sew your wrap ends together. Place on your candle to see how much you need to overlap your wrap ends. It should be about 1/2″ to 1″ overlap. Pin in place and then sew along the end line.
Place the finished wrap on the candle. For a finishing touch, tie a bow using your white ribbon.
It’s a super, simple sewing project, right? I hope you’ll give it a try. I made one for my friend who turned 80 years young. She’s an avid quilter like my mom so I really felt it was the perfect gift for her.
