DIY Floral Heart Wreath

This Valentine’s Day, make a statement in your home or at your Galentine’s Day party with a DIY Floral Heart Wreath. In this post, I’ll share my tips for using a styrofoam frame to combine fresh greenery with faux flowers. In the end, you’ll have a stunning wreath that will last all season.

So why a wreath for Valentine’s Day? This past Christmas, I shared how I made an oversized wreath that I hung over my couch (see tutorial here). I loved it and when I took it down I was a bit sad it was gone. However, why should we only have fun with our Christmas decor? I decided I needed to make Valentine’s Day just as fun as Christmas. Since I loved my Christmas wreath so much, I thought I’d just duplicate that success.

A couple of things I wanted to accomplish with my heart wreath and how it steered the process:

• I wanted to make a statement; therefore, it needed to be large (the frame is 24″) and colorful. (Honestly, I debated on making it bigger, but the styrofoam frames were a little too pricey.)
• I wanted to use the styrofoam heart again, but not the completed wreath. Therefore, I only used greening pins to attach items to the wreath. This eliminated the need for wire or a hot glue gun. And it proved to be a really easy method to attach everything. Bonus, I’ll be able to remove everything just as easily. And use the faux flowers again for another project.
• I wanted it to last for a few weeks, so I used faux blooms.
• I also wanted it to look real, so I used real greenery that would dry nicely. Usually, the leaves and stems of faux flowers are a dead giveaway that the flowers are faux; therefore, I always use real greenery even when using faux flowers. Seeded eucalyptus and other eucalyptus varieties dry nicely as well as lemon leaves.

Materials

• Styrofoam heart wreath frame (I used a 24″ frame, here’s a link to a similar one)
• Greening Pins (about 2 packages, 50 in each package)
• Fresh seeded eucalyptus
• Fresh lemon tip leaves
• About 6 large faux dahlias in two shades of pink ( I found mine at Michaels)
• About 4 large peonies in a light blush
• About 12 medium roses or another small flower in a dark pink
• About 12 medium roses or another small flower in a light blush
• About 6 small flowers in a dark or light pink
• 2 Command Picture & Frame Hanging Strips (optional, for hanging)

Instructions

Step one: Add greenery to the styrofoam frame using the greening pins. Start with the lemon tip leaves and then work in the seeded eucalyptus as well. Be sure to move around your wreath in the same direction, overlapping the leaves over the previous stems. Place the greening pins over groups of the stems, letting the leaves hang naturally.

Step two: Pop the flower heads off the stems of your large and medium flowers. Each flower head should easily slide off the stem, no cutting necessary. (Save the stems so you can use the flowers again once you’re done with the wreath.)

Step three: Place your flowers on the wreath to check for spacing. Start by spacing out your largest blooms and then fill in with the smaller blooms. Once you are happy with the look, you can move on to attaching your flowers.

Step four: Attach each large and medium flower using the greening pins. To use greening pins with your flowers, group a set of pedals together from the bottom of the flower. Slip the pin onto the pedal group and then slide the pin to the center of the flower. Now you can stick the flower on the styrofoam using the pin. The pin should be covered by the other pedals. Continue this same process with each flower. (See above for pictures.)

Step five: For an extra touch of whimsy, add a few small flowers in the greenery spots. Cut the stems to be about 4-5″ long and add them where you have seeded eucalyptus. The seeded eucalyptus will help hide the stem, but allow the bloom to look like it’s jutting out of the wreath.

Step six: Hang your wreath. I used two small Command Picture & Frame Hanging Strips. I placed them on the top of the heart. You could also use a regular nail.

The flower arrangement on the coffee table features faux flowers and fresh greenery as well. I actually started with the flower arrangement, using flowers I already had purchased for use in the fall; hence, the dahlias. I then bought the flowers for the wreath to match the flower arrangement. I did this by sticking with dahlias and using similar shades of pink—some may call them blush and bashful. Bonus points if you know the movie!

I flanked the heart wreath with a gold X and O. They started as brown paper mache letters from Target ($2.50 each). I painted the letters using Liquid Leaf in Gold to make them look like metal letters. I showed the process on Instagram, but will most likely follow up here with a blog post. It’s a Valentine’s Day craft that can be done in under five minutes.
