Inspired by handwoven leather furniture, this DIY Faux Leather Vase Wrap is a chic and affordable way to add leather to your home decor. You can make the vase for only $10, making it more affordable than buying a new leather sofa, chair, or ottoman. When styled with a mixture of fall branches, you have an impactful and effortless fall centerpiece.
For this DIY project, you’ll only need a glass vase, faux leather and hot glue. You can use any size glass vase, but for the instructions below I used an 8″ high by 6.125″ diameter glass vase from Walmart ($5). This vase worked perfectly with the roll of faux leather I found at Hobby Lobby (roll size is 8″ x 24″). I used two rolls. Usually, the Faux Leather costs $4.99/roll, but I got it half off.
I created the vase wrap so that it can slide on and off your glass vase. This allows you to take off the faux leather vase wrap when you clean the vase. It also allows you to use the glass vase without the wrap.
Materials
- 8″ H x 6.125″ D Glass Vase from Walmart (or any glass vase, you’ll just need to size your strips accordingly)
- 2 Rolls Cognac Faux Leather Ribbon from Hobby Lobby (or other faux leather)
- Hot Glue Gun and Hot Glue Sticks
- Clothespin
- Rotary Cutter, Ruler and Cutting Mat
Instructions
NOTE: The below instructions are for using an 8″ H x 6.125″ D glass vase. If using a different size vase, you’ll need to calculate how large to make your strips. You’ll need to make an even number of the short, vertical strips in order to have the pattern match up. If you have an odd number of vertical strips, the pattern will not work.

- Using a rotary cutter, cut 5 long faux leather strips and 12 short faux leather strips. The long strips are cut to 20 1/2″ x 1 5/8″. The short strips are cut to 8″ x 1 5/8″.
- Using the long and short faux leather strips, create a basket weave pattern. Leave off one of the short strips. Set it aside for the end.
- Starting about 3/4″ in on the long strips, hot glue the short faux leather strips to the long leather strips. It may seem like your short strips are too short, but they are not. You simply need to line the top of the short strip with the edge of the long strip and glue in place. Then align the bottom of the same short strip with the edge of the last long strip. Keep repeating until all but one short strip is attached.
- Wrap your basket weave creation around the glass vase. Secure it with the clothespin. Add the final short strip and again secure it with the clothespin. This final short strip completes your basket weave pattern. Adjust the long strips so the ends meet behind a short strip.
- Hot glue the ends of the long strips together while also weaving and hot gluing the final short strip in place.
- Style and enjoy.
Will you try to make this DIY Faux Leather Vase Wrap? I think the basketweave pattern adds a nice detail, but stay tuned, I have an even easier way to get a similar look. I’ll add it later this week. For more fall decor and entertaining ideas, be sure to visit our Fall inspiration page.
