Raise a glass of good cheer because Christmas is near! Wine bags are perfect for holiday decor, hostess gifts, Christmas gift exchanges, and stocking stuffers. I love making my own wine bags because they are an easy sewing project and you can customize the colors and design to match your style. My latest Good Cheer Christmas Wine bag features a vinyl saying I cut using my Cricut Maker. The wine bag’s sewing pattern is reversible; therefore, you get two looks with one bag. However, if you don’t sew, simply iron the Good Cheer saying onto any plain wine bag. Instructions for sewing the wine bag and ironing on the saying are below.
Sewing the Reversible Wine Bag
Once you learn to sew this wine bag, you’ll be able to customize the pattern for any holiday. I’ve used the same pattern for Valentine’s Day and Fourth of July. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of the process, but you can find saved “Story Highlight” videos on my Instagram account (@tonalitydesigns).
Materials
- White linen fabric – 1 piece 6.5″ x 32″ (you can also use two pieces sized 6.5″ x 16.25″, then just sew the two together to make one large piece)
- Coordinating cotton fabric – 1 piece 12″ x 16″
- Pom pom fringe
- Thread
- Sewing Machine
Instructions
- Cut your pieces of fabric according to the above measurements.
- Fray the edges of your linen fabric, so you have about a 1/4″ fringe on all sides. I used a seam ripper to help.
- Fold your linen fabric in half the short way so your piece measures 6.5″ x 16″. Topstitch along both 16″ sides right along the frayed edges, it’s about a 1/4″ seam allowance.
- Now you’re going to do the liner. For this, you need to fold your coordinating cotton fabric RIGHT SIDES together. Fold the long way so your piece measures 6″ x 16″. Sew down the 16″ raw edge and one 6″ raw edge.
- Keep your cotton liner wrong sides out and place it inside the outer linen bag. Align the seam of the cotton liner to one of the seams on the outer linen bag. Fold the top of the cotton liner under about 1/2″ and pin it in place. Then topstitch the top of the cotton liner and outer linen bag together using a 1/8″ seam allowance.
- Now your bag is ready for the “Good Cheer” saying.
Adding the Good Cheer Saying
Materials
- FREE Good Cheer Jpeg or FREE Good Cheer SVG
- Iron-on vinyl
- A vinyl cutting machine like the Cricut Maker
Instructions
Download the Good Cheer Jpeg or Good Cheer SVG and upload it to your cutting machine. Size the design to be about 3.5″ x 4.443″. Cut the design out of iron-on vinyl. Iron the design to the front of your wine bag. Now all you need is a bottle of wine and you’re good to go!
Will you make a wine bag for yourself or give one as a gift? Don’t forget, wine bags are fun to accessorize so add a cute wine stopper or even a candy cane. Wine charms would also be a nice touch. Enjoy!
