DIY Gold Foil Easter Eggs

March 10, 2016

There are lots of fancy Easter Egg dying tutorials, but the downside of using hard boiled eggs—they go bad within only a few days. This tutorial is perfect if you want to have eggs you can enjoy year after year. And the technique is easier than you think as I discovered Liquid Gold Leaf, so there is only one step for getting the gold look. So much easier than the traditional Gold Leaf Sheets.

Materials

  • Papier-mache eggs (I found them at Joann’s and also Michaels)
  • Acrylic craft paint (I used a variety of bright colors including teal, lime green, pink, orange, yellow and white)
  • Liquid Gold Leaf (I found it at Michaels)
  • Natural Sponges
  • Paint brushes
  • Drying Pin-Board (You can make one with foam board/floral foam and flathead pins)
  • Cadbury Mini Eggs (Okay, you don’t really need these, but they make Easter crafting so much more enjoyable—so good!)

Instructions

  1. Create a Drying Pin-Board. I loosely followed the instructions by Martha Stewart that you can find here. All I had on hand was floral foam and it worked fine. I also did not measure perfectly per her instructions. No one has time for that, well, at least I don’t.
  2. Paint eggs with acrylic paint. I found it worked best to “prime” the eggs with a coat of white first (at least for the lighter colors). All colors needed a couple coats. Let eggs dry between coats and before moving on to next step.
  3. Once eggs are dry, sponge on the liquid gold leaf. You can apply as much or as little as you want, depending on the look you are going for. In a few seconds you’ll have a gold leaf egg. It’s that easy! No glue or gold-leaf sheets needed.
